Motorcycle licence FAQ

What licence do I need to ride a motorbike in the UK?+
It depends on your age and the machine. CBT plus L plates covers a 50cc moped at 16 and a 125cc bike at 17. Full entitlements run AM at 16, A1 at 17, A2 at 19 and unrestricted category A at 24, or 21 by progressive access.
Do I have to take a test to ride a 125?+
No. A CBT certificate, a provisional licence and L plates let you ride a 125cc motorcycle from 17 without any test. Passing the A1 test removes the L plates, the pillion ban and the two-year expiry.
How long does CBT last?+
The DL196 certificate is valid for two years. If you have not passed a full motorcycle test by then you have to retake the whole course at full price.
What is the difference between A1, A2 and A?+
A1 covers bikes up to 125cc and 11kW from 17. A2 covers bikes up to 35kW with no capacity limit from 19. Category A is unrestricted from 24, or from 21 after two years on A2.
How much does a motorcycle licence cost?+
The DVSA fees come to about £147.50. Adding CBT and training, most riders spend £800 to £1,300 to reach a full licence.
