KTM is going bankrupt?

The media is reporting hot news and buzzing about KTM's bankruptcy, but is it really so?

I have bad news for those skeptical about the brand - KTM has not gone bankrupt, has not declared bankruptcy, and what is happening right now is an intensive restructuring process. Unfortunately, the mainstream media, which does not delve into the subject, present the situation as if KTM's production plants and the others had been abandoned by everyone and the lights had been turned off.

What is the restructuring of Pierer Mobility and what is its goal?

The restructuring is aimed at restoring the company's financial condition and, above all, financial liquidity. It has a legal nature, because the company is listed on the stock exchange and the regulations directly state that restructuring is necessary in such a situation.

What will the restructuring involve?

First of all, on the realistic presentation of KTM motorcycle sales forecasts for 2025 and 2026. KTM has learned a painful lesson that motorcycles sold to dealers are not the same as motorcycles that went to end customers - that is, to you. Although in 2024 the registration rates of new KTMs are good, the factory is not selling the planned number of motorcycles to dealers, which is due to too large stocks. When forecasting sales, Pierer Mobility will focus on how many new KTM motorcycles the market can absorb, and not how many KTM can produce or sell to dealers.

According to these forecasts, they are planning the production of new KTM Street 2025 and KTM Offroad 2026 models. They will take into account how many motorcycles are currently in dealer stocks - these motorcycles will go to customers first, because they will still be at attractive prices. Dealers will release stock, willing to promote and negotiate prices for individual 2024 models, which can be seen on advertising portals, among others.

In 2025, KTM will 99% produce too few new models than too many, because it will make less risky moves than before. KTM's priority will be to stabilize its financial situation and maintain the appropriate proportion between revenues and costs. Knowing the real numbers, after correcting erroneous assumptions about trends, KTM will adjust production and employment in factories to achieve the planned financial result - i.e. profit. This is intended to regain the trust of investors and banks. Hence, we see a wave of layoffs in KTM, resulting from the reduction in production. The upside of the situation will certainly be the improvement of product quality in the future. During the pandemic, KTM grew very dynamically, hired many new employees for the factory and subcontractors supplying parts, which caused problems with the quality of some products. They are also drawing conclusions from this.

Who will carry out the restructuring and why does it have a chance of success?

In September 2024, Gottfried Neumeister became the new chairman of the board alongside Stefan Pierer, as co-CEO. Everyone except Stefan Pierer was withdrawn from the board. I took a closer look at the new co-CEO and I think it was a very well-considered decision by Pierer, and the recruitment process has probably been going on for several months.

Who is Gottfried Neumeister - the new co-CEO of Pierrer Mobility? Gottfried is 47 years old. His energetic disposition makes him look much younger than he actually is. He is a graduate of the University of Vienna, and in 1999 he completed his MBA studies at the University of Los Angeles in the USA. In 2003, he co-founded the start-up "Flyniki" together with Niki Lauda and created the second largest airline in Austria, where in 2008 he became chairman of the board. The company “Flyniki” was sold to “Air Berlin” after achieving success. In 2012, Gottfried joined DO & CO Group - an international catering company based in Vienna, which achieved revenues of 1.2 billion euros in the 2022/2023 financial year. The net profit for this period amounted to 50 million euros in DO & CO Group. This is a company specializing in air catering, event catering, restaurant and hotel management, which maintains a strong position in the catering market thanks to high quality services and global expansion. For comparison, Pierer Mobility achieved revenues of 2.6 billion euros in 2023. Gottfried therefore has experience in running businesses in the first league, where revenues exceed one billion euros.

A big plus is that Gottfried also has experience in crisis management and restructuring. During the COVID pandemic, the aviation industry ran into huge problems, which did not bypass DO & CO Group. Airlines drastically reduced flights, and as a result, the demand for airline catering literally decreased overnight. How did DO & CO survive the crisis? Gottfried's actions focused on reducing operating costs: DO & CO introduced cost-saving programs, focusing on reducing operating and administrative expenses and adjusting employment. The company reduced the number of employees in the areas most affected by the pandemic, adapting human resources to current needs. Activities were also diversified. DO & CO increased its involvement in event catering and the development of its own restaurants and hotels, compensating for losses in the aviation sector. In addition, the company worked closely with airlines and other customers to flexibly adapt services to changing conditions and market needs.

Thanks to these actions, DO & CO maintained financial stability and emerged from the crisis with a shield, not on the shield. We can expect that similar actions will now be implemented at Pierer Mobility. This will certainly translate into better product quality and adjustment to current customer needs, as well as price stabilization.

Interestingly, despite the difficult situation, the brand is not disappearing from the MotoGP paddock or the Dakar Rally.

Exactly. The company has made some cuts and intends to return to its roots, i.e. to focus as much as possible on the KTM brand in the world of motorsport. After all, its slogan is READY TO RACE. Therefore, among other things, the decision was made to withdraw the factory GASGAS team from MotoGP, Husqvarna from Moto2, and the GASGAS and Husqvarna teams from starting in Dakar. However, there will be no shortage of orange teams in MotoGP and Dakar! For me, this is also a clear signal that if things were really bad at KTM - as many headlines scream, e.g. that it's over - the company would not allow itself to start in such an expensive discipline as MotoGP.

Why did KTM get into trouble?

In my opinion, one of the main reasons is the post-covid hurray-optimism. During the pandemic, people have significantly limited their travel. They did not go on vacation like every year, which left them with an additional household budget and they began to look more willingly for forms of personal entertainment, such as bicycles or motorcycles.

In order to relieve stress from the situation related to COVID and to relieve pressure - many people decided on such hobbies and bought new equipment. I think that the sales increases in this period were considered by KTM strategists as a real, permanent trend, and not a deviation from the trend, which is why they wrongly assumed similarly dynamic sales increases for the following years and adjusted production plans to this. Unfortunately, in 2023 KTM probably did not pay attention to how many motorcycles were reaching the market to end customers, and only relied on orders placed to the factory by dealers in individual markets. They were eager to buy motorcycles, also riding on a wave of optimism - just like KTM strategists. Unfortunately, the unexpected outbreak of war in Ukraine and the associated rapid increase in energy costs caused strong inflation and an increase in production costs, which was already awaiting European economies due to the printing of money as part of the Covid aid. Customers began to save, interest rates rose and the cost of mortgages or leasing began to be a heavy burden for many, as did the increase in energy bills. All this caused budgets for hobbies to shrink or disappear altogether, and therefore for motorcycles, and slowed down the growth in sales of new motorcycles.

How will this affect the availability of motorcycles?

It can be expected that there will be fewer street models in terms of volume, as well as offroad models 2026, which are not scheduled to appear until late autumn, and not in summer (May/June) as before. Offroad models 2024 with a production year of 2023 and individual street models from the current year are still available on the market. However, we know that KTM, in order to meet the expectations of its customers and reach new groups of recipients, will introduce as many as 6 new, small-capacity models to its offer in the 2025 season, which should be affordable. They will be dedicated to younger and less experienced motorcyclists. We are talking about such new products as the KTM 125 SMC R, KTM 390 SMC R, KTM 125 ENDURO R, KTM 390 ENDURO R, as well as the KTM 390 ADVENTURE and ADVENTURE R. We can expect them in showrooms in the first quarter of the new year.

What about parts for KTM motorcycles? Can this whole situation negatively affect their availability? Do customers have reason to worry?

There are a lot of orange motorcycles on the global market, which means a demand for spare parts. In my opinion, this is one of the most reliable branches of this enterprise, which brings significant income to the company. And it needs them now. Dealers received an official letter from the headquarters signed by the management itself, stating that the current situation in the company does not change anything for current and new customers of the brand. Parts, accessories, motorcycles will be delivered without any irregularities.
